Australian visas – know your options
If you’re considering moving to Australia for work or travel, it’s essential to understand the various visa options available. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate through some of the most popular visas:
417 Working Holiday Visa
Duration: One year visa, with the option of extending to a second or third year if you complete specified work in a specified region.
Age Limit: Under 35 for Ireland and the UK, 30 for some other countries.
Conditions: This is a solo visa, meaning you cannot include a partner or children. You must also have enough funds (equivalent to $5000 AUD) to support yourself initially.
Employer Sponsored Visas
Skills in Demand 482 Visa
Type: Employer-sponsored visa.
Duration: Four years, with a pathway to permanent residency (PR) after two years.
Streams:
Labour Agreement: Requires Labour Agreement between the employer and the government.
Specialist Skills Stream: For specific occupations listed on ANZSCO, with earnings over $135,000 per annum (not applicable to trades, machinery drivers, or labourers).
Core Skills Stream: The occupation to be on the Core Skills Occupation list. You must have one year of experience in the occupation and meet the education and work experience criteria.
Employer Nomination Scheme Visa 186 Direct Entry
Type: Employer-nominated visa.
Requirements: Occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List, a positive skills assessment, at least three years of work experience, and be under 45 years of age.
General Skilled Migration
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
Type: Permanent visa.
Requirements: Under 45 years of age, points-based system (minimum of 65 points), occupation must be on the Skilled Occupation List, skills assessment in your occupation, submit an Expression of Interest, and wait to be invited to apply.
Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 190)
Type: State-based permanent visa.
Requirements: Under 45 years of age, points-based system (minimum of 65 points), occupation must be on the Skilled Occupation List, skills assessment in your occupation, submit an Expression of Interest, and note that different states have different rules and occupation lists.
Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491)
Type: Five-year visa with eligibility to apply for PR after three years.
Requirements: Live and work in regional Australia, occupation on a relevant skilled occupation list, satisfy points test, skills assessment for the occupation, submit an Expression of Interest, and be invited to apply.
Rules for including family members on your Australian visa
Most visa applications allow you to include your partner and children as de-facto and dependents, except for the 417 Working Holiday Visa, provided they meet certain criteria.
Additional requirements
For all Australian visas, you must pass the Character Test, meet Health Requirements, and satisfy English language requirements.
