What to do before you start work in Ireland

What to do before you start work in Ireland

Before you start work, you will need to have a few things in place. Without some of these you may not be able to get your salary, or you could end up paying emergency tax or similar. Whether you are an Irish expat comping home or a new arrival, check off these steps to get ready for a job in Ireland.

Open your Irish bank account

You’ll want those hard-earned Euro to go somewhere, so first thing is to get your banking sorted out. If you have a digital bank account, such as Revolut, you might want to transfer that into the currency in which you are earning, to avoid unnecessary fees and the vagiaries of exchange rates.

Apply for a PPS number

A Personal Public Service (PPS) number is your unique identification number. You’ll need this not only to access public services and social welfare benefits, but to work, too.

  1. To apply for this:
Visit your local Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Office. Take along your passport, proof of address in Ireland (e.g. utility bill), and (if not an EMEA passport holder) evidence of your right to work in Ireland.
  2. Fill out the PPS Number Allocation Form (Form REG1) and submit it, along with the required documents.
  3. Once your application is processed, you’ll receive your PPS number by post.
Apply for a Public Services Card (PSC)

You need a PSC to access welfare services and to vote.

  1. Take your PPS number, along with your and proof of identity and address, to your Intreo Centre or designated PSC Registration Office.
  2. Complete the application form and get your photo taken for your PSC.
  3. Once your application is processed, you’ll receive your PSC by post.
Activate your PSC

Your PSC can be activated for employment-related services by linking it to your online MyWelfare account.
This is the online portal provided by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) in Ireland. Visit www.mywelfare.ie

Set up and access your MyGovID account

Set up your tax filing and government services at MyGovID. This service allows Irish residents to securely access a range of government services and information online, including tax filing. Create an account on the website: www.mygovid.ie

Register with your professional body

Certain professionals are required to obtain official recognition before they can work in Ireland. For example, nurses need to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. A failure to register could result in legal penalties or restrictions on practising. Do your research on your specific profession. Talk to the team at NexVentur for assistance with professional registration.
