How to exchange your Australian driver’s license for an Irish one

As a visitor in Ireland, you are allowed to drive with a valid driver’s license from any non-EU/EEA country for up to one year. However, once you establish ‘normal residence’ in Ireland, you must either exchange your foreign license for an Irish one or apply for a new Irish driver’s license. You are considered normally resident in Ireland if you typically live here for at least 185 days each year due to personal and occupational ties. Ireland has agreements with certain countries/states that recognise their licenses for exchange purposes and Australia is on the list.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process.

Step 1. Check if you’re eligible for an Irish driver’s license

First, ensure that your Australian driver’s license is valid and that you are a resident in Ireland. Ireland has a reciprocal agreement with Australia, allowing you to exchange your license without taking a driving test

Step 2. Gather the required documents

You’ll need the following documents to exchange your license:

  • Your current Australian driver’s license
  • Proof of identity (e.g., passport)
  • Proof of residency in Ireland (e.g., utility bill, rental agreement)
  • A completed application form for exchanging a foreign license
  • Two passport-sized photographs
  • The applicable fee for the exchange process
Step 3. Visit the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS)

You can apply for the exchange either online or in person at an NDLS center. If you choose to apply in person, make an appointment through the NDLS website to avoid long wait times

Step 4. Submit your application

At the NDLS center, submit your application form along with the required documents. The staff will verify your documents and take your photograph and signature for the new license

Step 5. Wait for processing

Once your application is submitted, it will be processed, and your Australian license will be sent back to the relevant Australian motor vehicle registry. The processing time can vary, so it’s a good idea to check the NDLS website for current processing times.
